Some twenty years ago, Nelson based, New Zealand sculptor, Suzy Moncrieff, had an idea on how to promote a rural art gallery. She decided to take the art off the walls and dress humans in it! And the idea of the World of Wearable Art (WOW) was born!

Since that time, the WOW has grown exponentially and has become New Zealand’s largest and most dynamic art even, described as;Mardi Gras meets haute couture.’

It has also migrated from Nelson to Wellington, country’s capital Lonely Planet described as the; ‘coolest little capital in the world’, and has become an annual event that attracts entries and audience from all over the world. In 2010, Mark D’Arcy as a guest judge commented that the show; ‘makes Lady Gaga look like a librarian and has more originality and creativity per minute than any other show I have ever seen.’ D’Arcy is a New York based creative arts and media expert.

Last night saw display of the same, if not even higher calibre of entries. The World of Wearable Art (WOW) Awards Show was once again kaleidoscope of spectacular and breath-taking creativity. During the two hours of music, dance, and theatre, designers from various occupations, different backgrounds and from all over the world, made visions of their imagination and skill walk on stage, like beings from some other worlds.

Take a look at some of those incredible creations selected as the top designs.

  1. Hi Daniela. Wow. What an odd selection! I like the one in the middle that is a cross between a quilt and a Tiffany lamp shade with the high collar. The chinese lanterns would be great for playing dodgem cars. Which one would you think I would look good in?? (your chance for payback!!). Hugs. Ralph x

    1. Hello there my friend!
Well, one can count on you for a good laugh … ‘a cross between a quilt and a Tiffany lamp shade’ – LOL! You are a character! Now, I can never really ‘pay you back’ without shared drink, but if I have to choose, I will certainly put you into the black and white number, all with hat and umbrella … wouldn’t you look dashing!
      Take Care,
      Daniela
